Sustainable Food Center Spring Resource give away day!

The Sustainable Food Center, umbrella organization of Festival Beach Community Garden and sponsor of our Serafina plot there, held their spring resource give away day March 4.
The SFC gives high quality compost, vegetable and herb plants , fertilizer , seeds and has plenty of educational materials for new-er and old-er gardeners.
If you’re in the Austin area, get in touch with the SFC and find out about their give aways, classes (even cooking classes) and all their activities.

My Park Day on March 5

Busy, busy week. March 5 was It’s My Park Day, and we had a bunch of activities in both Festival Beach Community Garden and Festival Beach Food Forest.
Volunteers showed up to tidy up the garden and the food forest, Dr Steve Ross’ architecture class from UT is working a new, more accessible path in the garden, the city of Austin gave away fruit trees to neighbors and we held a plant sale to benefit the garden. Whew!
Thanks to all gardeners, food forest peeps and volunteers!

Serafina and RBJ cheer!

East Side College Prep sent us their cheerleading squad! They held an arts and crafts class featuring bracelet making. At the end, they gave us a cheerleading performance, including a custom “RBJ Cheer” and a vocal performance by Ashley Sosa.
East Side College Prep and their parent organization, Southwest Key programs, have had a years long relationship with RBJ and with the Serafina organization.
Thanks to both for sending us these wonderful activities our way!

Keep Austin Fed is our new partner!

Keep Austin Fed (KAF) is a volunteer based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that gathers wholesome and nutritious surplus food from commercial kitchens and distributes it to area charities, like Serafina, that serve hungry people in need.

Serafina pantry clients enjoyed Snap Kitchen prepared meals as a result of their generous donation. The meal trays varied and included quinoa, bison, salads, chicken and salmon.

All are delicious!
Thanks guys!

Now harvesting at Festival Beach

Now harvesting at Festival Beach are  beautiful purple cauliflower, snap peas and broccoli bouquets.  Due to the weather changes, we missed getting some of the broccolinni on time, but the bees are sure having a grand time!

A broccoli bouquet, anyone? This one is from the Serafina plot.

This mass of purple lacy stuff is Mizuna, a lovely addition to any salad and is frequently seen during our distribution days. . Our thanks to Festival Beach Community Garden for hosting our veggie plot, and especially to property manager Julio Perez, Sylvia Marroquin, Alex Castaneda, Janet Roberts and Thomas O Connoll for their continuous assistance with so many tasks in the garden.

Thank you Treasure Trove!

On February 2, Serafina pantry distribution included the clothes generously donated by Treasure Trove on 7th street. We had dresses, blouses, men’s shirts, pants and scarves.
Here’s Emma, one of our regular clients, selecting a few items.
